Small Guinomi Sake Cup by Yōkigama
These small sake cups (guinomi) were made at Yōkigama, the ceramic workshop of artist Kimiko Tanaka.
Working in the blue and white Tobe-ware tradition of Ehime, Tanaka’s work stands out for the fine detail in her paint work.
This is especially striking on the small surface of these cups, which Tanaka has decorated individually by hand. On the base of each cup is Tanaka's pottery mark which reads 'ki', the first character of her first name, and the second in the name of her kiln.
Tobe-ware in its modern form often harks to the motifs of the classic age of Japanese porcelain. In her Yōkigama work Tanaka has such patterns appear alongside brush strokes of deep blue.
These cups can be paired with a matching Tokkuri sake vessel.
