This mortar of impressive size was made by Yukihito Nakata at his family’s pottery works in Kasama.
Nakata practices the repertory of Japanese ceramicist, but does not let himself be bound solely by tradition. His pieces are made with utility and their user in mind, and with an imagination for modern life. While liberal in the influences on his ceramic forms, Nakata often uses a traditional tobikanna chisel tool to achieve a chattering effect on the surface of his work. This pattern work is visible on this piece, which with its large diameter, is suitable for a cook looking for impact in the kitchen.
