This pen tray was made in the Awa washi tradition from Tokushima.   This is a region known for its indigo dye, and its combination with handmade paper has a long history.  The result is a mixture of colours and texture that is striking when placed close.

Size: 23cm x 16.5cm.

About Awa Washi

Paper making in Tokushima dates back at least 1300 years, to the Imbe clan and their production for the imperial court.  In the late Middle Ages, the Awa indigo-dyed washi was known across Japan.  The tradition survives today.

Care and use

The tray can be used as a desk tidy, or as storage for accessories and similar items.

In is susceptible to water, so it is not suitable as a coaster.   Use in a dry place.
