These small ‘donburi’ style bowls were made by Oshima Totaro Shoten, a traditional lacquerware maker in Ishikawa.  Working in the Yamanaka-shikki style, this is a form of lacquered wood that emphasises the lines of the original material.

Each bowl is 9cm high and 11cm in diameter.  They weighs 135g.

About Yamanaka Shikki

The roots of this lacquerware tradition can be traced to the late 16th century, and wood craftspeople who moved to the region in search of good materials.  This was the foundation of a tradition that was established close to the Yamanaka hot springs (onsen).  By the mid-Edo period the area was known for its trays and bowls, as its reputation for lacquerware developed together with the springs resort.  This further grew into a lineage of exquisite quality with work in maki-e (lacquered designs enhanced with metal powder) and some of Japan’s finest exponents of wood turning.

Care and use

The bowl is suitable for hot soups, rice, or noodles.  It is not microwave or dishwasher safe.  It is better not to soak in water or expose to direct sunlight for prolonged periods.  Clean with and dry with a soft cloth, and avoid contact with abrasive sponges.
