These small vases were made at the Yukutaya kiln in Okinawa.

In a jungle clearing close to the main pottery settlement in Yomitan, the Chibana family work on traditionally made Okinawa ceramics.

Their process involves Okinawan clay, sometimes softened by foot, thrown on the wheel and fired in a self-built nobori-gama (climbing kiln).

Using glazes made with burnt straw ash as their main ingredient, these vases were decorated by hand. The deep blue, browns and greens are within the classic colour palette of pottery made in Okinawa.

As each is hand made there are variations between them, but they are around 5.5cm in diameter and heigh. They weigh around 150g.
