With its warm climate and rich soil, Chiran in Minami-kyushu has the perfect environment for growing tea leaves.

Not surprising then that the name of Chiran is historically famous throughout Japan for its tea with the city being the biggest producer in the country. With generations of the same family at the farm using the time honoured methods of the past 100 years, this is tea that is steeped in the weight of tradition. And that is the secret to their consistently high-quality produce _ respect and loyalty to the unchanging techniques of cultivation and manufacturing which ensure a product that evokes a proud history of tea making.

Such ancient traditions notwithstanding, the Chiran Tea Farm is at the forefront of a very modern concern, that of the desire for farming that is sustainable, organic and non-destructive to the environment. Something that the farm has been dedicated to since the last Century in its full commitment to organic farming at every stage both in terms of its zero use of pesticides but also fertilisers. Instead, with its home-made fermented fertiliser, a holistically beneficial ecosystem has been created around the crops whereby the healthy soil offers all the nutrients required while the surrounding plants are cultivated to encourage the insect life necessary to protect those crops.

It is a fully integrated biodiverse system from which the famously rich green tea leaves are grown with their distinctive sweet non bitter flavour and aroma.
