About Echizen Washi

Legend has it that around 1,500 years ago a beautiful princess appeared by the Okata River and taught the villagers the art of papermaking. During the Nara period, paper from the region was highly valued for transcribing Buddhist sutras.

As demand for paper grew among the samurai warrior class, both production and technique developed. Supremely high quality paper such as Echizen helped establish the region’s reputation, and the craft of papermaking flourished under the protection of the shogunate and local lords. In modern times, Echizen washi has garnered the support of many artists including Yokoyama Taikan, bringing it recognition throughout Japan.
