About Monika FuruyaA potter in Kasama since 2014, Monika Furuya is a graduate of the town’s ceramic university. In her work she says she aims for items, that almost without noticing it, become part of their owner’s daily life. She fires into her ceramics a gentle charm that pervades, with simple floral patterns and sometimes references to the cats with which she shares her studio.Furuya’s most recurring motif is a beaded flower like shape that she has appear on the surface of her work. This is achieved in the icchin ceramic technique, with detailed lined pattern work connecting the floral beads. Furuya says that she uses lightly drawn guidelines only when spacing the design, to prevent it becoming too formulaic. Each piece she makes evolves this design, and is a product of her individual labour. She most often pairs her pattern work with cream or brown glaze shades.
