This woven bamboo basket was made by Nanpu Kogei using material sourced in Oita, in north eastern Kyushu.

Blending several layers of complexity, the piece was created using bamboo stems split into strips and threaded by hand.

It is 23cm in diameter, and 8cm high. It weighs a little over 80g.

About Nanpu Kōgei

The dense expanses of bamboo found in Japan’s Oita prefecture lend themselves to craft. When harvested and worked into strips the potential of the material is wide in the hands of skilled workers. Nanpu Kogei, based in Hiji in Oita apply the simple formula of craftspeople and materials to facilitate the creation of fine bamboo items. Founded in 1979, the company works in staples such as chopsticks, bento boxes and ornaments, as well as new products of their imagination including fragrance dispensers and more besides.
