About Suruga bamboo craft

This extraordinary bamboo craftsmanship began in the early Edo period, primarily as a form of supplementary work for samurai warriors.

In the mid-19th century, a samurai from the Okazaki domain passed on his bamboo-working skills to Shimizu Inobei. These techniques were used to make dishes for sweets and insect cages, which were sold as fine crafts to those traveling up and down the Tokaido route.
