About Hasami ware

Hasami ware is understood to have begun in the late 16th century, when the lord of the Omura Domain participated in Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s invasion of Korea and brought back Korean potters upon his return.

By the early Edo period, local kilns were producing porcelain bowls, plates, sake flasks and other everyday vessels. Among the best known were sturdy bowls decorated in an underglaze of blue. Used to serve food and sake to people aboard boats docking at the wharves of Osaka, these became known as kurawanka bowls.
