About wholesale
This small lacquer box by Shirakiya Shikki-ten reveals in exquisite detail the lustrous sheen of the lacquer and the beauty of the intricate decorative technique that is maki-e. The design motif of bellflowers evokes a hint of autumn amidst the heat of summer. In the Japanese language of flowers, the bellflower carries the meaning of “zealous devotion”.
About Aizu Lacquerware
The origins of Aizu lacquerware lie in the Muromachi period, when a powerful local clan encouraged the planting of lacquer trees. During the Azuchi–Momoyama period, a military lord from Omi took control of Aizu and invited lacquer craftspeople from his home region to settle there. Their skills helped transform the local lacquer craftsmanship into an established industry.
The later introduction of maki-e techniques from Kyoto brought further refinement. By the mid-Edo period, Aizu makers had secured permission from Japan's military authority, the Shogunate to even try exporting overseas. Although the upheaval of the Meiji Restoration temporarily weakened production, the craft recovered and entered a period of renewed prosperity.
