About Kyo-Yuzen

This famous traditional technique of dyeing has been passed down since the 8th century, and it is said that hand-painted Yuzen was established during the Edo period by the Kyoto painter Miyazaki Yuzen-sai who was highly celebrated for his painted fans.  By adapting his distinctive pictorial style to textile patterning, this gave rise to the new technique of “Yuzen dyeing.”

Its richly coloured, painterly designs became popular on kimono during the mid-Edo period, as urban merchant culture flourished. In the Meiji period,  the shashi Yuzen dyeing technique was developed, in which stencils were used for the dyeing process.
