[Atelier Densan] Naruko Style Kokeshi (5 sun) By Yasuo Okazaki

This Kokeshi was made by the traditional craftsperson Yasuo Okazaki, in Miyagi.  The hand painted expression contrasts with the natural lines of its material.  A maker of kokeshi since the early days of his youth, Okazaki’s is imbued with skill and character.

This is a ‘5 sun’ size piece.  (one ‘sun’ equates to just over 3cm, and so it 15.15cm in height).

About Miyagi Kokeshi

Kokeshi are said to have emerged as onsen resort souvenirs in the mid Edo period (1603-1868).  There are five main styles: Naruko, Sakunami, Togatta, Yajiro and Hijiori.

Care and use

Decorative ornaments, kokeshi should be kept away from water and direct sunlight. They can be cleaned with soft, dry cloth.
