The history of glasswork in Japan is relatively recent in comparison to ceramics.
But there are two great centres of intricate cut glass, one on the country’s southern tip, in Kagoshima, and the other in the capital, Tokyo. In the field of crafts, both regions are known by their old names: Satsuma and Edo respectively.
The cut glass made here brings classic Japanese patterns to the imported technique of glass. In this way, a new tradition was born.
